The Green Divider is a drainless system — water goes into the box but does not come out. Letting the unit sit and run for extended periods without attention can cause complications. We recommend a cursory check on the boxes once a month using the guidelines below.
Basic Care Routines
Plants adapt to watering routines over time. As a baseline, each box should receive 7 minutes and 30 seconds of watering per week. You may need to adjust based on plant type — for example, we recommend doubling this amount for especially thirsty plants like Box Ferns. When environmental conditions shift (such as when AC comes on in the spring or heating in the fall), adjust your schedules accordingly.
1. Understand Your Zones
The Green Divider has four independently controlled irrigation zones, each controlling water to a separate box. Use the app to set different schedules for different plant types — for example, arid vs. wetland species.
2. Monitor Plant Response
Manual timers do not make the system maintenance-free. Check plants periodically:
Direct Planted
Use a moisture meter, wooden chopstick, or your finger at the bottom of the box to assess saturation.
Nursery Pots
Visually inspect the planter liner for accumulated water. Some pooling after watering is normal — pooling for multiple days signals overwatering.
Sub-Irrigation
Check the indicator. Boxes must go through dry-out periods for plant health — do not keep boxes full with water at all times.
3. Confirm Water Uptake
For boxes using nursery pots, verify each pot is drawing water by checking for pooling inside the planter inserts:
Pooling water for multiple days inside an insert → overwatering. Reduce run time.
Dry, wilted, or crispy leaves → underwatering. Increase run time.
Adjust timer durations in the app based on plant response. Plants will generally adapt to a reasonable watering range, but the system is not self-regulating.
Refilling the Tank
The tank holds approximately 6 gallons and typically needs refilling every 6–8 weeks. You'll be alerted via in-app notification or the red LED indicator light on the unit.
Refill Steps
Remove the wooden lid on the base box.
Remove the cap on the stainless steel tank.
Refill with approximately 6 gallons of water. A watering cart or 2-gallon watering can works well. If using a watering can, point the nozzle away from the electronics in the center of the box. Use reverse osmosis or treated water whenever possible.
Replace the cap on the tank.
Replace the wooden lid on the base box.
Fertilizing
Use topcoat fertilizers — granular fertilizers, fertilizer sticks, or fertilizer tabs applied to the manufacturer's recommendation. Apply directly to the soil surface.
Do not add liquid fertilizer directly to the water tank. This can clog irrigation lines and cause buildup in pump components over time.
Remove & Replace the ILCU
You may need to remove the ILCU for damage, a malfunction, or to reach a loose cable. The module is designed for easy access.

Remove the ILCU
Disconnect the Check Valves from the ILCU Cage.
Pull the ILCU Cage up and rest it on top of the tank.
Disconnect the irrigation tubing from the pumps.
Disconnect the four cables from the ILCU: Power Cable, Liquid Level Sensor, LED Indicator, and LED Light Connector.
Replace the ILCU
Connect all four cables to the ILCU: Power Cable, Liquid Level Sensor, LED Indicator, and LED Light Connector.
Reconnect the irrigation tubing to the pumps. Long tubing from the tank connects to the input (left side) of the pumps; shorter tubing from the ILCU Cage connects to the output (right side).
Place the ILCU Cage back into the box.
Reconnect the Check Valves. Check Valve #1 connects to the left-most tube; Check Valve #4 connects to the right-most tube.
How to Reset the ILCU
Disconnect power to the ILCU. The easiest way is to disconnect one end of the Transformer Brick.
Hold down the Mode Button — the small circular button between the LED Light and the Light Button on the ILCU.
While holding the Mode Button, reconnect power. The LED will flash between 4 colors quickly, then rapidly pulse blue.
Once the blue pulse slows to one pulse per second, release the Mode Button. The ILCU is now reset.
